When werecougar Kat discovers who her newfound love Remi Gere really is, will she go for his heart—or his throat?

WELCOME TO ALPINE RIDGE
Nestled in the middle of the Colorado Rocky Mountain wilderness, this town may be small but it holds big surprises.
MEET THE CHARACTERS OF BEAST of BURDEN
KAT BASET
When a werewolf kills her father, Kat copes the best she can—she rips out its throat. Kat’s a werecougar and her secret’s safe as long as she wears grandma’s amulet. Yet there are some things not even a werecougar can outrun.
Hiding from the killer inside, once-popular Kat walks the halls of Alpine Ridge High, cast out of the in-crowd by her best friend Malcolm, alone in a sea of former friends. When they target her as the butt of their jokes, Kat struggles to keep her claws retracted.
Even if Kat’s almost given up, life hasn’t forgotten about her. New boy in town Remi Gere has all the makings of a knight on a white horse—hot, sweet, and chivalrous—an unexpected breath of first love.
REMI GERE
At six-two, two hundred and some change, they call Remi ‘The Beast’ on the football field. That name brings a cocky smile to his face, because Remi can run with the wolves all right. Even as the new guy in town, Remi’s got it made at Alpine Ridge—hot, popular, a star-athlete—but there are some treats even a top dog can’t resist—a gorgeous, complicated girl named Kat Baset. Kat’s the loaner his new friends ridicule. Remi realizes their relationship won’t come easy, especially when all of his plans go to the dogs.
MALCOLM KENNETT
Nobody messes with Malcolm Kennett. He’s a grizzly of a left tackle at six-four and over three-hundred pounds. Malcolm can smash any defensive end coming his way. But even The King of Popular can’t deal with the school freak, Kat Baset. Ever since they were kids, something’s been different about Kat. And after that night in his room…Don’t even bring it up—unless you want pounded in the dirt.
GRANDMA BASET “GRAMS”
Miriam Baset’s family has always said, “The only good wolf is a dead wolf.” Ever since her precious granddaughter Kat slashed the throat of that evil dog Hansen, Grams is bound and determined to keep Kat’s secret under wraps with her magic amulet. Little does Grams know the very thing crafted to protect Kat could destroy her.
FAUST and LARENTINA GERE
Faust’s emotions run hot and cold and he’s never around for his family when needed. Seeming more interested in the seven zeros in his Swiss bank account, Faust never worries if Remi heads down the right path or if his meddling wife pushes their son away.
Larentina, a cunning and overbearing mother, gives new definition to a word meaning female dog. No one’s good enough for her beautiful, perfect son Remi. Find out what lengths Larentina will go to end her son’s romance with that repulsive Kat.
HANSEN FREKE
The despicable werewolf packmaster who murdered Kat’s father. Even after death Hansen haunts her family.

GLIMPSE INTO THE WORLD OF BEAST OF BURDEN...
Kat managed the mile scourge through thick undergrowth. Barbs scratched at her flesh. Stones and broken twigs bruised her feet. She continued until the trees thinned, until the soft glow of light from her grandmother’s kitchen window filtered through stark silhouettes of branches. Hammering past the barn, Kat stumbled up the steps of the back porch. Her hands trembled as she grasped for the back door and quietly, slowly, twisted the brass knob until the door creaked open. She pushed her way into the kitchen, the hard tile more inviting than the thick, wet carpet of forest, and tiptoed past the living room, hearing the late night movie play. The light from the TV flickered on the wall beside her.
A bright glare of white suddenly lit up the hallway. It burned Kat’s eyes as if she had lived in the dark her entire life. She let out a curdled scream.
“Oh.” Grams gasped. Her grandmother stared at her in tatters, bruised and scathed, the golden chain and amulet missing from around her neck. “Dear God…”
Kat’s chest constricted. Her eyes glowed amber. She could barely get out the words. “It happened again.”
